Okay, let’s be real: When I first Googled “Pilates for beginners,” I was drowning in conflicting advice. “Start with mat!” “No, reformers are better!” “Just buy a red resistance band!” As a girl, me, who switched from jogging to Pilates to avoid bulky calves (and honestly😂, to feel less uncoordinated), here’s my messy-but-honest take after three months of trial, error, and way too much Reddit scrolling. If you confused like me. I hope it can help you a little.
Myths I Fell For (And Regret)
“Mat Pilates is easier because… it’s just a mat, right?”hh😂😂
NOPE.🙅🏻
My first mat pilates workout felt like trying to balance a noodle on a waterbed. And I used the video introduction in YouTube. It's so difficult to start. No springs, no straps—just me, my shaky core, and the fact is that “simple” doesn’t mean “easy.” I tried the Reformer Pilates trial class at a private Pilates studio near my house, and the instructor taught me a lot about Pilates. One of her opinions is something I agree with from my own experience, and I also saw the same opinion on the Reddit.
"Mat Pilates effective but different. You don’t get the same level of arm or leg work in the mat. There are many very advanced exercises that are super challenging that you just can’t do on the mat because the refomer pilates provides a lot more possibilities for movement the springs give resistance. But the mat work is effective on its own but ultimately it’s only one part of the whole system of Pilates." This is comment from Reddit, and I completely agree with her.
So I think mat Pilates is actually harder (and harder to do “right” than reformer) - so if you’re new to Pilates like me, I’d 100000% invest in going to more reformer Pilates than mat, especially at the outset.
The Reformer is like your supportive workout buddy, guiding you through each movement. It allows you to focus on specific muscle groups one at a time. On the mat, however, you're juggling multiple challenges at once - just maintaining proper alignment is a workout in itself!
About of costs - yes, Pilates isn't the most budget-friendly exercise option out there. But you know what they say: you get what you pay for. Many pilateslovers give up after experiencing subpar instruction or mediocre studios, which is such a shame! Investing in a quality reformer and professional instruction isn't just spending money - it's investing in your health and quality of life. 💫This is the answer that time has given me.
“Reformers are just for rich yoga moms, athletes, dancers or people who need rehabilitation.”
No. Reformer Pilates welcome everyone.
Turns out, the loudest Reformer fans I met in the studio are a 60-year-old dude rehabbing his tennis elbow and a college athlete working on agility. The machine’s not judging your leggings—it’s too busy making your hamstrings cry. And I still remember my first “Pilates shakes”, I can’t believe it and it also happened now. And it’s my secret , I farted while doing Pilates.😡
“Seems like reformer would be cool but then I would have to spend lots of money and interact with people while I exercise, and the seems like a nightmare. ” I read this comment in the Reddit. I’d like to say, yes, so am I. my choice is that after one-week Reformer Pilates class, I bought my first Pilates reformer equipment from JuSai. I think it’s the most right choice I have ever made.
I don't have to workout with so many people(I'm an introvert). I don't have to feel awkward during my Pilates shakes, I have my own private space, and I can save the time I spend on the way. This is so great!
Some might worry that a Pilates reformer is too bulky and impossible to handle alone. Let me tell you - that's not the case at all! I got a foldable reformer that comes with wheels, and I can easily set it up and store it away all by myself. Of course, if you have family members who can help out, that's even better! 😊
“Pick one and stick with it.”
Why?
I like them both. I mostly do reformer since I need to improve my flexibility. But when I need the core workout, I will choose mat Pilates. Mat taught me to actually engage my core (RIP, my former “plank” form). Reformer helped me build strength without feeling like I was wrestling a rabid octopus. For instance I do reformer twice a week and one mat every other week in conjunction with my other workouts now.
What Works When You’re Clueless
Mat Pilates: Cheap, Brutal, Super Portable
Good for: Secretly practicing in your living room, learning what “neutral spine” actually means, and realizing your “strong core” was a lie.
Sucks at: Not making you cheat.Oops.
Reformer Pilates: Fancy but Forgiving
Good for: Making you feel like a sci-fi hero (so many straps and springs!)
Sucks at: Not draining your wallet.
How I Actually Started (Without Quitting)
🤗For my first week: Did 3 Reformer classes. And googled the information about the Reformers and help me know about the structure of the Reformers, such as how to adjust the foot bar and how to choose the right springs. And I will talk with my Pilates teacher about the problem I met.
🤗For my 2-4 weeks: I bought a Reformer for home use, and I can do Pilates workouts safely. Watched free YouTube mat videos (shoutout to Move With Nicole) for 10 mins daily to drill breathing.
🤗Month2: Added 1 weekly mat workout. Cried a little during “the hundred.”
🤗Now, I do reformer twice a week and one mat every other week in conjunction with my other workouts.
The Things Nobody Told Me
“No pain” doesn’t mean “no effort”: If your neck hurts during mat crunches, you’re doing it wrong.
Choose the right clothes, especially socks. I choose the socks with 5 toes and the bottom is non-slip.
Pay attention to your breath, it is the most important thing when you do Pilates.
Trust yourself.
Making the Right Choice To Start
Consider Starting with Reformer If:
- You're completely new to Pilates
- You want proper form guidance
- You have joint issues
- You enjoy structured class environments
- Budget isn't a major concern
Consider Starting with Mat If:
- You have some body awareness already
- You prefer working out alone
- You're on a tight budget
- You travel frequently
- You enjoy challenging your core strength
Remember, mat Pilates and reformer Pilates are just two types of Pilates exercises, and you don't have to choose one over the other. You just have to be clear about your goals and choose the right exercise at the right time.
PS.My calves didn’t get bigger. Victory! 🎉
