What is Pilates Reformer? Does the Refomer Pilates Actually Work?-JuSai Pilates

Summary:

Describe the structure and the effect of the Pilates reformer.  The most Pilates reformers offer similar basic functions, so beginners shouldn’t fixate on expensive brands. Unless you’re a professional athlete, a budget-friendly model can meet your needs just fine. If you’re already thinking about reselling, you’re probably not committed enough to justify the investment. Remember: the reformer is a tool to do exercise, it can help you do more better and make your movements more standard. Consistency is key to results! After all, the best Pilates  reformer is the one you’ll actually use!

Hey there, Pilates lovers! I’m Yoki, your bubbly Pilates obsessed friend who’s here to make the reformer machine way less intimidating. 🎉 If you’ve ever walked into a studio and thought, “It's so amazing. Uhh, It's ready to start to do reformer Pilates now? But how to use it? What are those things? ,” trust me – I’ve been there. But once you get to know this magical reformer equipment, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!

Today, we’re breaking down every single part of the Pilates reformer. Think of me as your hype girl explaining each component like it’s a new pair of shoes (but way more functional!). By the end, you’ll be chatting about springs and straps like a pro. Let’s move on!

1.  What Exactly Is a Pilates Reformer?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty, let’s start with the basics. The reformer is that sleek, metallic/wood machine with a sliding carriage, springs, and straps. It’s designed to challenge your strength, flexibility, and balance. Joseph Pilates himself called it the “reformer” because it literally reforms your body – improve your body and purify your mind!

A little fun thing: The first reformer was built in the 1920s using parts from hospital beds.

Can Pilates help you lose weight?
I know you will have many quesions here, but I cannot give a direct answer about "Yes" or ''No". You can read this article and it may help your find the answer to yourself.
Pilates is low-impact fitness by use the breathing rules. Please remember that whether it is mat Pilates or reformer Pilates, they are just one way to Pilates. There is another article to talking about the mat pilates vs. reformer pilates.

2. Let’s Meet the Reformer Structure!

Alright, let’s get up close and personal with Pilates reformers. I’ll walk you through each component, what it does, and why it matters. Grab a notebook – this is juicy stuff!

A. The Frame & Carriage: The Foundation of Your Workouts

Frame: The big metal/wood “body” of the machine. It’s sturdy AF, so you can trust it won’t wobble during your hardest moves. And there are classic reformer and the foldable reformer. They all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Folding beds are easy to store and use at home or in small studios; traditional Pilates beds are more stable and suitable for long-term and high-intensity use, and are more suitable for use in large studios or company fitness rooms.
Carriage: The sliding platform you lie on. It glides smoothly thanks to wheels on the bottom.
Why It Matters: The carriage creates resistance as you push or pull, making your muscles work overtime. Think of it like a treadmill… but for slow, controlled movements.
Pro Tip: Always check the wheels before your session to make sure they’re clean and rolling freely!

B. Springs: The Powerhouses Behind the Burn

Ah, the springs – these little guys are the heart of the reformer.  They come in different colors (usually green, blue, red, or yellow) and tensions:
Green: Light resistance (great for beginners or rehab)
Blue: Medium resistance (perfect for most workouts)
Red: Heavy resistance (for Pilates advanced)
Yellow: Extra heavy (you’re a Pilates final boss if you use these!)
How They Work: When you pull the carriage or straps, the springs create opposition, forcing your muscles to engage. It’s like having a personal trainer pushing back against you!
Yoki’s Secret: Start with lighter springs to build control, then level up as you get stronger. No shame in taking it slow!

C. Foot Bar & Foot Platform: Where Your Feet Do the Talking

Foot Bar: The horizontal bar at the foot end of the carriage. You’ll press or pull against it. It’s adjustable, so you can customize your position.
Foot Platform: The padded area where you place your feet.
Why They Matter: These guys are key for lower body exercises like bridges or leg presses. Adjust the platform height to target different muscle groups – higher = more glutes, lower = more quads.
Try This: Place your feet on the foot bar, and push it away. Feel those legs shake? That’s the magic!

D. Pulley System: The Silent Operators

The pulley system is like the reformer’s nervous system – it transfers your movements into resistance. Here’s what you need to know:
Pulley Rod: The vertical metal rod with hooks.
Pulley Rope: The rope that loops around the pulley rod. It can adjust the length.
Adjustable Handles: The padded grips you hold onto.
How They Work: When you pull the handles or straps, the pulley system multiplies the resistance from the springs. It’s physics in action, baby!
Yoki’s Hack: Adjust the handles to different heights to target your arms, back, or shoulders. High handles = more back focus, low handles = more chest work.

E. Straps & Loops: Your Multi-Tasking Besties

These are the unsung heroes of the Pilates reformer machines:
Double Loops Straps: Thick straps with two loops. Perfect for footwork or arm exercises. Little loops are for your hands and another bigger are for your foot or arms or another Pilates equipment such as fitness circle.
Hook Straps: Narrow straps with hooks for attaching to the foot bar or carriage.
Why They Rock: Use them to add variety to your workouts. Wrap them around your feet for leg curls, or hold them for tricep dips. The possibilities are endless!

F. Headrest & Shoulder Pads: Comfort is Key!

Headrest: The padded cushion for your noggin. Adjust it to a height that feels cozy.
Shoulder Pads: The soft pads on the carriage. They support your upper body during moves like the Hundred.
Why They Matter: You’ll be lying on this thing for 50 minutes – comfort is non-negotiable! Make sure the headrest isn’t too high or low before you start.

G. Spring Bar & Hook Strap: The Connection Points

Spring Bar: The horizontal bar where the springs attach.
Hook Strap: A strap with a hook that connects the springs to the carriage or foot bar.
Why They’re Important: These parts let you customize the resistance. Add more springs for a challenge, or remove them to take it easy.
Yoki’s Rule: Always double-check that the hooks are securely latched. Safety first, ladies!

H. Wheel End for Moving: Mobility Matters
Some reformers have wheels at the end for easy transport. If yours does, use them to roll it into place – no heavy lifting required! It's normally used in flodable reformer.

3. How to Choose Your Reformer Like a Pro

7 questions to ask yourself
Why do you choose Pilates reformer?
What is your goal with those Pilates equipment?
Where to use the Pilates machines?
When to use it?
Who to use it?
How to do reformer Pilates?
How much is your budget?

In my opinion, most Pilates reformers have the same functions. Except for professional athletes, the basic functions of reformers are enough to meet our needs. So don't pay special attention to the brand of Pilates machines. Pay more attention to what you need and which reformer meets your needs, and get out of some unnecessary misunderstandings. I admit that the products of famous brands are definitely more valuable, but the price will definitely be higher. Many Pilatesloveres will definitely consider it more convenient to resell the Pilates reformer of famous brands, but if you consider reselling before buying, my advice is not to buy it. Because you know that you can't stick to exercise, such an investment is completely unnecessary. You must know that the Pilates reformer is only a medium for exercise. It is not a panacea. More importantly, your persistence can produce the results you want most.

4. Common Questions Answered

Q: Is the reformer only for advanced exercisers?
Nope! Beginners can start with lighter springs and simple moves. I promise, you’ll get the hang of it!
Q: Do I need to be flexible to use it?
Not at all! The reformer helps improve flexibility as you use it. Start where you are and grow from there.
Q: Can I do cardio on the reformer?
It’s more about strength and control than cardio, but you’ll definitely break a sweat!

From step by step, it is more suitable for beginners than Pilates mats and can keep your posture correct. But before starting to exercise Pilates at home, it is recommended to experience it in a small Pilates studio, which can help you better understand how to do reformer Pilates.
